Split screen videos are one of the fastest-growing formats on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. They let you show two pieces of content simultaneously — a reaction next to the original, a before-and-after comparison, or a tutorial paired with a demonstration. Until now, creating them required video editing software like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. With AIVantage Split Screen, you can do it entirely in your browser in under a minute — for free.

What is a Split Screen Video?

A split screen video combines two separate video clips into a single frame, displayed either stacked vertically (top and bottom) or side-by-side (left and right). The format is ideal for:

  • Before and after comparisons — show the raw footage next to the edited version (subtitles on vs off, colour grade before vs after)
  • Reaction videos — film yourself reacting to another clip in the same frame
  • Tutorial + demo — show instructions on one side and a live demonstration on the other
  • Dual perspectives — combine two camera angles from the same event

Choosing the Right Layout

AIVantage Split Screen supports three output layouts:

  • 9:16 (Stacked) — ideal for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. Each video occupies the top and bottom half of a vertical frame at 1080×1920.
  • 16:9 (Side-by-side) — perfect for YouTube landscape videos. Both videos sit left and right in a 1920×1080 frame.
  • 1:1 (Side-by-side square) — great for Instagram feed posts and LinkedIn. Both videos split a 1080×1080 square equally.

How to Make a Split Screen Video with AIVantage

  1. Choose your layout — pick 9:16, 16:9, or 1:1 depending on where you plan to publish.
  2. Upload two videos — click the upload zones for Video 1 (top or left) and Video 2 (bottom or right). MP4, MOV, and AVI are all supported.
  3. Reframe each clip — a crop box appears over each video preview. Drag it to choose exactly which part of each video is visible in the output. This is especially useful for portrait subjects filmed in landscape.
  4. Add overlays (optional) — type a label for each half (e.g. "BEFORE" and "AFTER"), add a header banner, and choose your text and divider colours.
  5. Choose audio — keep the audio from Video 1, Video 2, or mix both together.
  6. Create and download — click "Create Split Screen" and download your finished video as an MP4.

Using the Crop Box for Better Framing

One of the most common issues with split screen videos is that both clips end up showing the wrong part of the frame — the subject is cut off, or there is too much empty space. The crop box in AIVantage lets you drag and reframe each clip independently before processing. The crop region you select is the exact area that will appear in the final output, so you can ensure your subject is always centred and well-framed in their half of the video.

Adding Text Labels and a Header

The Overlays section lets you brand your split screen video without any extra editing tools:

  • Labels — add a short text label to each half (e.g. "BEFORE" on top, "AFTER" on the bottom). These appear near the divider line so viewers immediately understand what they are watching.
  • Header text — add a title banner at the very top of the video. Useful for adding a hook or context, such as "Subtitles: On vs Off".
  • Colours — pick any colour for your text and for the divider line between the two halves. White on dark videos is the classic choice, but yellow or cyan can pop depending on your content.

Tips for a Great Split Screen

  • Keep both clips roughly the same length. The output ends when the shorter video ends — if you need them to match perfectly, trim the longer clip first using Clip Wizard.
  • Use the stacked 9:16 layout for Shorts and Reels — vertical formats perform best on mobile feeds.
  • When doing a before/after comparison, record both clips at the same zoom level and with the subject in roughly the same position. The crop box will handle minor alignment differences.
  • For reaction videos, film your reaction at the same frame rate as the source clip to avoid audio sync drift.

No Software, No Sign-Up Required

AIVantage Split Screen runs entirely in your browser. There is no software to install and no account required to get started. The processing happens in the cloud, so even a low-spec laptop can produce a full 1080p split screen video without any lag. Signed-in users get full quality output; guests get a short watermark on the exported video.

Whether you are a content creator making reaction videos, an educator comparing techniques, or a marketer running a before-and-after campaign, Split Screen gives you a polished two-clip format in a fraction of the time it would take in traditional editing software.
